Make WordPress maintenance a controlled, recoverable process

WordPress maintenance should leave you with both a verified update and a usable recovery route. Before updating the core application, a theme or a plugin, create a current backup of the website files and database.

Review compatibility with the PHP version and other active components. Use staging where your service provides it, and prevent the test copy from sending production messages or processing real payments.

After an update, check public pages as well as administrator access, forms, media handling and checkout. Keep the pre-change recovery point until normal operation is confirmed. If rollback becomes necessary, consider any customer activity recorded after the backup.
