Use the connection details assigned to your mailbox rather than guessing settings from your website address. The correct mail hostname can differ from the domain used for the website, especially when email is hosted separately. Each mailbox needs its own credentials; a client-area password normally does not authenticate an email account.

Recommended workflow

  1. Find the mailbox connection instructions in its control panel or activation details. In cPanel, use Email Accounts and Connect Devices when available.
  2. Enter the complete email address as the username and use the recommended encrypted incoming and outgoing settings.
  3. Enable outgoing-server authentication. Send a message to an external mailbox, reply to it, and check that both directions work.

IMAP keeps messages and folders synchronized across devices. Before replacing an existing POP configuration, export locally stored mail so that older messages are not lost during the change. Do not delete the working account until you can see both old messages and a newly received test message.

If the application reports a certificate mismatch, stop and verify the server hostname against the official connection details. Do not bypass the warning as a permanent fix. When requesting assistance, include the application name, server hostname, port, encryption method and exact error, while removing the mailbox password.
